Have you ever wondered what the world would be, if there was no music in it? Not any kind of music and no instruments of any kind. What would it mean? I think we as human beings would still continue to survive as music is not essential for one's survival (I mean generally speaking for everyone else. I think music is essential for my survival). Other than being a creative outlet and a source of endless entertainment, music also serves as a memory reminder. Don't you think?
Did a song ever make you think of a place or a time when you first heard that song? Did a song ever refresh a memory of an incident that occurred in your life? When you listen to songs from your youth or childhood or any age, does it take you back to that time and make you reminisce those times? It happens to me all the time.
I can talk about a memory associated with almost every song I hear but two albums come to mind for today's conversation.
Dil Chahta Hai movie had released when I first moved to US. I did not own the album or a decent player to play the songs at that time. It was also a very hectic time of my life as I was being exposed to a whole lot of first experiences. I don't quite remember where I heard the songs but I heard the songs for the first time during that time. Since then, every time Dil Chahta Hai songs are played anywhere, I am transported to that phase of my life. I am overwhelmed with a flood of strange feeling of uncertainty, foolish optimism, and fearlessness associated with that frame of my life. It goes away after I stop listening to the songs. Happens every time!
Do songs ever remind you of a person? For me they do!
I am very close to my aunt and her family. Her children and my first cousins are among some of my favorite people in life. I went to watched the movie "Priyuralu Pilichindi" (telugu version of Kandukondein Kandukondein) in a theater with my aunt, her son and daughter. That was the first time I heard the songs, right there on the screen. I was very impressed with the songs, the picturization, and the movie in general. Not so much because I liked the content but because I watched it with some of my favorite people. Every time I listen to the songs from that movie, I remember the experience of going to the movie, the conversations we had before, during, and after the movie... like it happened yesterday!
Strange isn't it? Does any song bring back any memories for you?
