I listened to the songs of Sardaar Gabbar Singh a while ago but haven't had a chance to record here. It took a couple of hearings for me to get comfortable with the songs. After that, I quite enjoyed the songs. Devi Sri Prasad always ends up giving the best of his songs for Pawan's movies. It is no different this time.
Sardaar - Powerful delivery by Benny Dayal. It sets the stage for Pawan's character in the movie. Benny Dayal is like a chameleon as he tries to modulate his voice to suit Pawan's personality and the telugu diction was right on.
O Pilla Subhanalla - A sweet, breezy song brimming with the DSP style. There are no words to describe how amazing Shreya sounds and how hard she works to get the telugu diction right. Vijay Prakash shines through in this song. I quite enjoyed the last paragraph. I am extremely conflicted about the lyrics. Part of me enjoyed the lyrics and part of me was yearning for better lyrics.
Tauba Tauba - A fun and peppy song that starts on a high and stays there. Based on the hindi song "Apni to Aisi Jaisi", the tune has been adapted to the purpose of the movie really well. Nakaash Aziz's voice quality is quite good and I liked the choice of his voice for the song. I am guessing the voice suited PK really well. I wish the telugu diction was better but it was not too distracting.
Aadevadanna Eedevadanna - The token song for all the PK fans in the tollywood. I am sure all of his fans quite enjoyed this song. I am thinking that one has to be in a separate space of understanding what PK means to his fans to create a song of this sort and for someone to pen the words. It was done well and serves the intent well.
Nee Chepakallu - Chinmayee and Sagar did justice to the song. This is a refreshing departure to the breezy formulaic love songs that one gets to listen in the movies. I liked the song. There is a certain oldie flavor to this song that is interesting. I cannot imagine how the song was picturized. I also wonder how Sagar's voice suited PK.
Khakee Chokka - A full-on masala song that is a pre-requisite in any telugu super star movie, more importantly in a PK film. Simha and Mamta Sharma crooned the song adequately well. I am surely there are a lot of takers for this song but this is not my cup of tea.
Now for a rant. This is not specific to this movie but generally for any movie. I will keep on reviewing the movie songs with the hope that one of these days I will come across a sound track that does not sound so formulaic. One romantic song, one conflict song, one masala song, one item song, and one fan-worship song. Are we ever going to get off of this treadmill? I guess expecting that for a PK full-on mass film is unfair but one can hope!
