Well… if you guessed “Jalte Hain Jiske Liye” you are bang on! Every legendary singer is unique in their own way! That said, I can see someone replacing the talent of Rafi and Kishore but the legendary talent of Talat Mahmood is irreplaceable. He is the lonely spokesperson for a style of singing that is so unique to him. The “lilt” in his voice, the intensity in the tone, and the smoothness in his style of singing cannot be reproduced. Above all, his singing is so classy that it is majestic.
"Jalte Hain Jiske Liye" is a classic! This song makes me proud of being associated with the Indian Cinema Industry. He falls in love with the shy one. He promises her that he will sing her a song, when he can find words for the tune he had set. He sings a song over the phone to convey his love and also the fact that he finally found words for his beautiful tune. What does she do? She is overcome with sadness that she has this amazing lover that is pouring his heart to her and yet something is preventing her from acknowledging that. She knows that he is “Brahmin” and she is “untouchable” and therefore their union cannot happen. Seems like a social issue from the past and not very relevant to this day and time. True and yet there is something else that is crushing the basic human freedom today! How sweet and sad is Nutan and how innocent and dreamy is Sunil Dutt?
And then you will find Sunil Dutt doing a role reversal in this other often forgotten gem by Talat Mahmood. Easily one of my favorite songs, Aasoo Samajh Ke” is the most poignantly written, beautifully crafted, and melodiously sung composition.
